When Sotan was a young boy, he was called as "Tan boy". He was in the training of "Kasshiki" for boys at Daitokuji Temple.
Buddhist priest Shunoku who was his teacher wrote a poem about Tan boy.

3. Top of the sream

There has been a stream for long time. Sotan lived in a hermitage at this place where located at the top of the stream.
This looks like storehouse for utensils. I heard that utensil was a word that came from Buddhist objects to deliver Buddhism originally.

Pink Japanese plums are blooming scenting this year.

12. Konnichan

Sotan named it in the meaning of "Live for today" from the Zen teaching of "Do not expect for tomorrow". Let's talk about a legend that I know.
Long, long time ago, a white fox settled to live in a temple ground of Kyoto...
The white fox changed oneself to Sotan and visited to tea ceremonies as a guest...
His tail often appeared from under his robe, but people shammed not seeing it and gave him courteous treatment saying,
"Oh! Sotan!" Yes, even today, there is a small shrine dedicated to the Sotan Fox behind of a bell tower in Shokokuji temple.
Many people keep visiting there endlessly yearning after Sotan and thinking about the fox...

On December 30, almost the end of the year, they burn woods. First, they pound mochi in order to offer Shinto and Buddhist deities.
Then, the first tea ceremony is held in the new year in order to server tea to guests.
